~ Halewijn ~
- 2009

.

Halewijn was born on the 6th of September 1951 in the city of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. He was the first born Child of Henk Scheuerman. In 1952 the family moved to Alblasserdam where his brother and sisters were born. He attended kindergarten there. In 1957 his father found work with a French company with a factory located in Spain. The whole family migrated to the big village of Sabiñanigo in the Pyrenees Mountains. Halewijn first attended primary at the Company's French school in Spain but finished his last year with a French family in Etsaut (France).

He started secondary school as a boarder at the Lycee Public d' Oloron St. Marie. The life as a boarder was difficult for him and on several occasions he ran away from school. There was an attempt to go to a private boarding with the Jesuits. As that did not succeed either, he went back home to Spain and continued his secondary school in Spanish.

The family moved back to the Netherlands where he continued high school in Middelburg.

He graduated from high school after which he joined the army for his 18 month military service in a transmission unit where he passed his licence to drive trucks and motorbikes.

During that year he bought an apartment together with his Dutch girlfriend Marjolein Rijken. He had two golden hands (what his eyes saw, could make his hands) and completely renovated his new home.

He started his studies in Psychology at the University of Utrecht and received his bachelors. After a few years he got his first job at the Dutch railway organisation. He worked a few years in several jobs and after that he started to study Political Sciences, which he did not finish.

He travelled to West Africa, crossing the Sahara desert, by motorbike to visit his brother and sister-in-law who at that time lived in Cameroon.

He bought together with his girlfriend a Toyota Landcruiser, which he transformed into a camper together with Marjolein Rijken and Hanneke de Bakker.

They travelled 4 months all the way from Holland through Africa until Kenya where he met John Bisley in Lake Turkana. He stayed in Kenya a little longer and it is at this occasion that he met Joyce for the first time. He was looking for a different kind of life. He did not want to work in an office or organisation. He was looking for much more adventure in which he could use his intelligence, talents and creativity.

He purchased a Unimog truck (still existing) together with Marjolein Rijken and Hanneke de Bakker and after one year of preparation they started cycling safaris in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Gametrackers NL was founded. Due to Halewijns extraordinary gift to contact and meet inhabitants in remote areas he offered the Dutch tourists adventurous holidays which are still unequalled.

He came on a reconnaissance trip in the Northern part of Kenya to set up walking and biking trips in the area of Lake Turkana. The ground operator for these trips was "Gametrackers Kenya" of which Joyce was at the time the Operations manager.

On February 2nd he married Joyce at Registrar of Marriages in Sheria House. Three days later they left for a 15 days walking safari/honeymoon with camels in the Ndoto Mountains that Halewijn was guiding. They then headed to the south of Lake Turkana walking for 5 days with donkeys. Two boats were to arrive from Loyangalani to pick them but one of them was carried away to the other side and only one arrived. They put the clients on the boat since they had a flight to catch but they barely made it as the boat capsized and they found themselves swimming with crocodiles. In the meantime, Halewijn, Joyce and a Turkana boy (Agostino) went on survival mode as they had nothing and drank from the lake. Halewijn by then had become quite ill and in desperation had started building a raft to go find rescue when a boat arrived. The boat owners had not believed anyone was left behind and only when the family in Nairobi called them since the couple was expected for their wedding reception was a boat sent. This experience led to Halewijn buying his first boat and navigating on Lake Turkana but also to the birth of his first daughter Jalida on the 23rd of October.

Joyce left her job at Gametrackers and together they incorporated a safari business under the name "Hiking and Cycling Kenya Ltd".

On February 26th his second born daughter Ngalivia was born.

In order to cater specifically for the Turkana safaris, they incorporated a second safari company in Kenya under the name "Jade Sea Journeys Ltd". Operations grew and a camp was built on western Shores of the Lake under the name Lobolo camp.

Using one of the motorboats Halewijn navigated from Lake Turkana to the Omo River in Ethiopia. Reaching a place called Omo Rate he was arrested by the local military (Tigre) commander. But after helping him with some food and transport for his troops with the boat he was issued with a 'permit' to further navigate up river. This is the first time Halewijn visited the tribal areas of the Bume and the Karo. He liked very much what he experienced and saw a great potential for future safari development. He thought about motorboat safaris combining Lake Turkana in Kenya and The Omo River in Ethiopia.

Jade Sea Journeys started operating combined motorboat safaris between Lake Turkana and The Omo River. Travel Ethiopia Tour Company provided the legal 'umbrella' for these trans border operations.

Jade Sea Journeys and Travel Ethiopia had already parted ways for several years and together with two new partners he incorporated "Lumale Tour Operations Plc".

Lumale camp in Duss, a village along the Omo River, was operational and the first clients arrived by boat from Turkana.

Halewijn became part of a Hamar family. Together with his new father Maya and brother Gadi they organised his bull jumping. For a few months he underwent different ceremonies in preparation for the day where he would walk four times over the back of bulls. It is also this year that he purchased his KTM motorbike to be used to move around in Ethiopia.

He took a break from safari hosting/guiding world and stayed in Nairobi to assist Joyce with operations and administration of the company. On Wednesday the 9th of December Halewijn had a fatal motorbike accident at the age of 58 years.
